Edward VII was the King of England from
1901 – 1910. Whilst some Edwardian households embraced the latest
Art Nouveau designs many
returned to the furniture styles of the past and the classical
revivals.
The Art Nouveau movement was born in the dawn of a
new 20th
century and the desire to create something new and exciting. Its
linear designs used geometric shapes and a good example is the linear

The return to the classic styles of Sheraton and Hepplewhite
can be seen in the abundant use of Mahogany in Edwardian furniture.
Much of this wood species was imported from the British colonies in
the West Indies and Honduras and mahogany had become the favored wood
of fine cabinet makers in Britain as early as the 1730's. Principal
furniture constructors in England included Waring and Gillow and
Maple & Company.
