Inspiration for the Royale Collection came from the Beaux Arts movement of the
late 19th century. In French, the term beaux arts means fine arts.
Based on ideas taught at the legendary École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the style
flourished between 1885 and 1920. Broadly speaking it also refers to the
American Renaissance period from about 1890 to 1920 and also encompasses the
French Renaissance, Italian Renaissance, and Neoclassical Revivals.
In those pre-income tax days, great fortunes were proudly displayed in
increasingly ornate and expensive houses. The style was very influential in the
US in that many of our leading late 19th century architects were trained at
École des Beaux-Arts.
Here at home in the United States, these ideas inspired
planned suburbs with vast parks and wide, manicured boulevards lined with large,
showcase houses. The New York Public Library, New York's Grand Central Terminal
and the Boston Public Library are celebrated examples of the Beaux Arts style.
Royale is very much inspired by a host of Beaux Arts architectural elements
found in the medallions, crown moldings and ceiling tiles throughout Europe.
This regal collection is crafted from Birch solids, butt cherry veneers and has
dusty, gold-painted overlays and multi-framed panels of floral rosette
medallions. The collection invites prosperity to the home with features such as
shell and acanthus leaf molding; acanthus leaf and scroll pilaster shafts,
capitals and feet. More than any other style, the Beaux Arts expressed the taste
and values of America's industrial barons at the turn of the century.
